Fiercely cold air continues to grip the KVOE listening area.
Overnight lows have hit -10 and wind chills have reached -30. Travel has been slowed considerably after light snowfall across the area, with local arterials and residential streets partly to completely covered and side streets completely covered. Highways aren’t much better, with partly covered conditions now uniform across the area.
Emergency accident reporting continues in the Emporia city limits. If you get into a non-injury crash, exchange insurance information with other drivers involved and file a report with Emporia Police at your earliest convenience. Those in-town non-injury crashes do not need to be immediately reported to Emergency Dispatch, but the department is asking residents who have crashes outside the city limits to call those in.

More light snowfall is possible Monday afternoon with up to an inch possible at most after we received around 2.25 inches of snow Sunday. Air temperatures will struggle to get above zero with wind chills possibly in the -20 to -30 range all day. Overnight lows could be -15 with wind chills in the -20 to -25 range. Governor Laura Kelly announced a state of disaster emergency due to the extreme conditions, and both she and utility companies are urging residents to conserve their electric or natural gas use until conditions improve.
Winter weather advisories continue for Lyon and most surrounding counties until 3 pm, with Chase and Greenwood counties in separate advisories until noon. Wind chill warnings continue areawide until noon Tuesday.
Conditions gradually improve this week, and the current forecast has highs getting above freezing Friday and into the 40s by Saturday.
