One person was taken to the hospital after a destructive house fire in Americus early Monday.
Firefighters were called to Seventh and Locust around 3:15 am and found the fire fully underway, according to Emporia Fire Capt. Jesse Taylor. He says the structure had fallen in on top of itself.
The water flow also halted several times during the incident. Taylor says that was to be expected with air temperatures around -10 and wind chills at -25 to -33 during the firefighting effort.
The fire was initially reported as involving a garage, not the house. The currently unnamed homeowner was taken to Newman Regional Health with what is being called a respiratory emergency. It’s not yet clear whether that had anything to do with the fire.
Besides Emporia, Lyon County District 4 — the city’s rural unit — as well as Americus and Hartford-Neosho Rapids all responded.
The cause and origination point are being investigated. Lyon County deputies will have more information later.

Area firefighters have had a busy Monday morning so far.
Emporia and several Lyon County departments were called out to a fire that ultimately destroyed a garage at Seventh and Locust in Americus before 4 am. The currently-unnamed landowner was taken to Newman Regional Health for what’s being called a respiratory emergency, but it’s unclear whether that was fire- or smoke-related.
Firefighters have also had sporadic issues with water flow to get the fire out.
Details should be announced later.
