With yet another round of rolling power blackouts possible Tuesday night into Wednesday, several KVOE listeners have asked whether Emporia will reopen warming shelters to cover the potential outage period.
At this time, the answer is no. City Manager Mark McAnarney says the initial plan was to open White Auditorium and the Lee Beran Recreation Center to cover one 24-hour time period, but the situation will be revisited Wednesday morning. Emporia opened up White Auditorium on Monday evening through Tuesday morning and the Lee Beran Recreation Center from Tuesday morning until early Tuesday evening. The shelters saw little traffic while they were open.
Osage City, meanwhile, is opening up the Osage City Methodist Church at 11 pm. Residents using the shelter are asked to use the parking lot behind the church and call the number on the door to be let inside. They are also asked to bring pillows, blankets, sleeping bags, snacks and charger cords because those items will not be provided. Masks are recommended.
Overnight low temperatures are expected just above zero.
