The Chase County Bulldogs pulled off the doubleheader sweep of Madison, Thursday night, with the Chase County boys winning 31-30 on a last-second shot and the Chase County girls outpacing Madison 53-19.
In the boys’ game, Chase County’s Tylon Ybarra tipped in a missed shot with 1.1 seconds to play to defeat Madison. Madison took a 30-29 lead with one minute and 20 seconds to play, but couldn’t add to their lead — missing 6 of 8 free throws in the fourth quarter. Defense dominated the game, with both teams struggling to gain traction on offense. Chase County assistant coach Troy Johnson, filling in for head coach Cade Witte who in quarantine, said they were stressing playing strong defense throughout and the last-second shot summed up their resiliency.
Chase County was led by Cooper Schroer’s 8 points. Madison was paced by Kelton Buettner, who fouled out with one minute and 57 seconds to play, with 12 points. Chase County improves to 11-6, while Madison falls to 14-4.
In the girls’ game, Chase County started on a 16-0 run and never looked back. They led 20-1 after the first quarter and 33-7 at halftime, fueled by forcing 15 Madison first-half turnovers. Coach Ron Slaymaker, who was concerned ahead of the game because the lack of recent practice time, said he was happy with how they played despite normally being hard to please.
Chase County was led by Brittany Schroer’s game-high 18 points and Kaylee Simpson’s 17 points. Madison was led by Sarah Miser’s 12 points. Chase County improved to 10-5, while Madison falls to 8-10.
