Polar Plunge 2021 is almost here.
The “Frozen in Time” fundraiser for Special Olympics is getting reconfigured this year to account for the coronavirus pandemic, but will still have the core event — the plunge itself — and a virtual Polar Strut 5K on Saturday. Spokesperson Shelley Lutes says the funds give Special Olympians experiences they won’t soon forget.
The plunge begins at 11:30 am. Plungers will get a set time to line up and jump in. With no warming tents on site, they will then run straight to their vehicles to warm up.
Walk-in registrations and spectators aren’t allowed at Mouse Lake due to COVID-19, but people can watch the festivities from the Special Olympics Facebook page. Normal activities at the Emporia Senior Center, including breakfast, lunch and a silent auction, are not being held this year but may well return next year. The Pluck-a-Duck fundraiser is still available online.
The Polar Strut, meanwhile, is a virtual event. Participants can do their 5K virtually through Sunday, and the Strut again is part of the Emporia Recreation Commission’s Super Series of events.
