Typically the doors of American Legion Post 5 stand closed on Sundays, however, they were open this Sunday for a very special occasion.
The Legion Doors stood open to welcome Operation Desert Storm and Gulf War veterans as part of a special reunion organized by Local veteran Clay Childs. Childs says Sunday’s event truly illustrates how the bonds forged amongst men and women who have served their country far exceed just their time in the military.
Childs went on to say he is currently working to try and get more veterans, across all branches and eras of service, involved with the legion both from a political and personal standpoint. On the political end, he explained “there is power in numbers” and veterans have to be able to stand together and share their voices to ensure all of their “interests are addressed.”
Personally speaking, Childs says he wants it to be known there are people and organizations, such as the American Legion, that will be here to support them when they return from duty and begin to transition from military to civilian life.
Additionally, Childs says he hopes the Desert Storm reunion will be a part of a larger personal mission to remind residents of the historical impact Desert Storm and the Gulf War had on modern-day society.
