Outdoor burning will not be allowed in Lyon or most surrounding counties Sunday.
The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties between 12-7 pm Sunday for overall critical fire danger, including south-southwest winds as high as 35 mph, high temperatures in the 60s, humidity levels at or below 25 percent and dry vegetation.
Lyon County and several neighboring counties automatically announce burn bans whenever red flag warnings are in effect. Wabaunsee County had already announced a burn ban effective from 2 pm Saturday until 7 pm Monday before the red flag warning was stated. Chase County is not currently in a red flag warning, but a burn ban will be in effect Sunday and possibly Monday.
The Weather Service says any fires that develop will spread rapidly and will be difficult to control if they start.
Residents who have conducted controlled burns recently are asked to do what they can to prevent them from rekindling.
The upcoming week is not conducive to grass burns, which have already seen an active start with close to 15 out-of-control burns Thursday and Friday combined just in Lyon County. The current forecast calls for dry conditions, temperatures in the 70s and wind gusts as high as 30-35 mph through Wednesday.
