The Olpe Girls and Boys are state bound after sub-state championship victories Saturday.
In the girl’s game, Olpe utilized a pair of runs to defeat the Burlingame Lady Bearcats 49-33.
Olpe opened the game with a 13-0 run and took a 15-4 lead into the second quarter before Burlingame would catch fire and managed to cut Olpe’s lead to seven heading into the locker room 25-18. In the second half, Burlingame would cut the lead to five before a 15-1 run would see Olpe pull away for good.
Olpe senior Maya Bishop led all scorers with 15 points in the game. She says they have some unfinished business heading into state this year.
Fellow Olpe senior Macy Smith also ended the day in double figures with 12 points. Head Coach Jesse Nelson says he likes how his team is playing heading into state.
Burlingame had two players in double figures on the day. Senior Megan Giffin ended the game with 14 points and freshman Kaylin Noonan added 13.
In the boy’s championship game, Olpe would trail only once in their 43-27 win over the Madison Bulldogs.
Madison opened the scoring in the first quarter taking a 3-0 lead before an 8-0 run gave the Eagles a lead they would never relinquish. Madison would come within four of retaking the lead in the second and opened the third quarter cutting Olpe’s lead to one, but the Eagles would go on to outscore Madison 23-11 overall in the second half to close out the win.
Olpe was led in scoring by senior Jordan Barnard with 15 points. This will be the first state appearance for the Eagles since 2015.
Barnard says it’s a big accomplishment.
Olpe Head Coach Chris Schmidt says his team ramped up the defensive pressure in the second half.
Madison was led in scoring by senior Ryan Wolgram with nine points.
The Olpe Lady Eagles will open state play hosting the Flint Hills Mustangs in Olpe Monday night. The Olpe Eagles will travel to Wichita Classical for the opening round of the state tournament on Tuesday.
