Fire danger and severe weather potential are in the forecast for Wednesday.
A combination of warm temperatures, dry vegetation, low humidity levels and winds approaching 50 mph have prompted the National Weather Service to issue red flag warnings for Lyon, Chase, Greenwood, Morris and Wabaunsee counties from 11 am to 7 pm Wednesday.
The warning means Lyon County will not allow controlled burns. Emporia Fire had already announced no burning will be allowed in the city limits for Wednesday. Chase, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties are in separate burn bans this week.
The fire danger will wane as we see our first opportunity of severe weather for the year. Hail up to the size of quarters is possible with storms developing after 8 pm. Wind gusts up to 60 mph are also possible. The entire listening area is in a slight severe weather risk, according to the Storm Prediction Center.
The fire danger should be greatly reduced for the rest of the week through the upcoming weekend as numerous rain chances are in the current forecast.
