Travel was disrupted for a short time on a portion of Interstate 35 Wednesday afternoon due to a minor grass fire.
Fire was reported at mile marker 138 on I-35 shortly before 12:30 pm. According to Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Tony Fuller, the fire developed near the on-ramp at the 138 exit before jumping the median and spreading to the off ramp on the opposite side of the interstate.
Traffic had to be stopped for several minutes in all directions for safety purposes as crews combated the flames. Traffic has since resumed.
Two acres of grass were scorched as a result of the fire. An exact cause has yet to be determined, however, Fuller says early indications point to careless disposal of smoking materials.
