The Olpe Eagles are on to Dodge City and the state semifinals after a 50-30 victory over Wichita Classical Tuesday evening.
Olpe shutout Classical in the first quarter, taking a 17-0 lead into the second quarter. The Saints would come alive in the second and outscored Olpe 17-7 overall and would only trail by eight 25-17 at the half.
Classical would try to keep it close in the second half, but the Eagles would never relinquish the lead outscoring the Saints 14-7 in the third and 11-6 in the fourth to secure their spot in the final four.
Head Coach Chris Schmidt says his team’s explosive start made a major difference late in the game.
Junior Derek Hoelting led Olpe in scoring with a team-high 14 points. Senior Jordan Barnard added 12 points and junior Damon Redeker ended the night with 10.
Wichita Classical sophomore Jordy Dolloff led all scorers with 15 points on the night.
The Olpe boys join the Olpe girls in Dodge City after the Lady Eagles advanced to the state semifinals with a win over Flint Hills Monday evening. The Lady Eagles will play their semifinal matchup against Jetmore-Hodgeman County at 3 pm Thursday.
The Eagles will face Little River in their semifinal matchup at 7 pm Friday.
The Waverly boys were eliminated from the 1A DII tournament.
Elyria Christian outscored Waverly 47-41.
All state semi-finals are set.
For the 5A State tournament to be played at Emporias’ White Auditorium:
In the girls’ semi-finals Thursday Andover Central the number 1 seed plays Salina Central at 3 pm.
Aquinas plays Lansing in the 7 pm game.
In the boys’ semi-finals Friday –
Maize the number 1 seed play Kansas City Washington at 3 pm. Topeka West the number 2 seed plays DeSoto at 7 pm.
