The ongoing high fire danger will give way to a chance of strong storms as the day continues.
Wind advisories are already up areawide with gusts topping 50 mph before 6 am. Red flag warnings are coming for Lyon, Chase, Greenwood, Morris and Wabaunsee counties from 11 am to 7 pm. The warning means Lyon County will not allow controlled burns. Emporia had already announced no burning will be allowed in the city limits for Wednesday. Chase, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties are in separate burn bans this week.
By evening, we see a slight chance of severe weather — but TV-13 meteorologist Doug Meyers says some computer models indicate no activity whatsoever.
If storms develop across the area, hail up to the size of quarters is possible after 8 pm. Wind gusts up to 60 mph are also possible.
The fire danger should be greatly reduced for the rest of the week through the upcoming weekend as numerous rain chances are in the current forecast.
Tuesday wind gusts reached 51 mph at the Emporia Municipal Airport. Other peak gusts:
*Coffey County Airport: 40 mph
*Eureka: 44 mph
*Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve: 40 mph
