With the impacts of the recent deep freeze that impacted the state of Kansas last month getting set to hit consumer utility bills, residents are reminded there is assistance available to help reduce their financial burden.
Applications are available for the Federal Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP), which provides utility assistance for low-income families, through late May. The deadline was recently extended to May 28 by Governor Laura Kelly as her administration continues work to help residents navigate higher than normal utility bills due to the recent extreme cold that saw energy and gas usage at an all-time high.
Kansas Department of Children and Families LIEAP Coordinator Lewis Kimsey says there are several assistance programs available, however, LIEAP is arguably the best option for those in need.
Kimsey went on to say they are beginning to see a spike in LIEAP applications, and while it is not “significant” at this time, he is expecting it to increase in the coming weeks. Kimsey adds there are no concerns that the likely spike in applications will deplete the program’s available funds.
Before Thursday, eligible residents had to have an income at or below 130 percent of the federal poverty level. However; as the governor extended the application deadline she also increased the federal income requirement to 150 percent of the federal poverty level.
If you would like to apply for LIEAP assistance you can acquire a paper copy at any DCF office, by calling 1-800-432-0043 or by contacting a DCF utility partner. Digital applications can also be found online at DCF.KS.Gov.
