Americus is getting a second round of grant funding to expand broadband Internet access in the town.
S&A Telephone is receiving almost $101,000 in additional funds to bring over 50 homes online with 1-gigabit-speed service. S&A Telephone had received $107,000 last fall to build out its network for downtown Americus.
This is part of the state’s Broadband Acceleration Grant program announced last year to expand broadband access to Kansas communities. State funds are matched by local entities.
S&A operations supervisor Josh Reece says a lack of suitable broadband service has been an issue in Americus for some time and the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for broadband with remote work, home schooling and telehealth services all strained with the previous capabilities. Reece says the state grant program helped to bring S&A’s plans to fruition.
S&A Telephone serves Americus, Allen, Admire and other parts of Lyon and Osage counties with fiber internet, telephone, security and managed IT services.
