The Kansas Board of Regents has accepted Emporia State University’s recommendations on how to proceed with its low-enrollment programs.
As part of its monthly meeting this week, the Board of Regents approved ESU’s list of Strategic Program Alignments after the university was asked to present data and recommendations on over 10 programs. When this was discussed two months ago, Provost David Cordle said administrators had to go beyond the raw data before making recommendations and cases could be made for keeping programs despite the low enrollment. And that’s what happened: eight of the 11 programs under review will continue without further action or potential action.
Health Teacher Education will merge with Physical Education, giving students one program to prepare them for licensure in both disciplines. General Physics and Drama and Dramatics will have additional reviews later this spring with ESU beginning a “comprehensive budget reduction process.”
This followed Emporia State’s recommendations last summer to discontinue its Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling due to limited student demand and the need for other resources to meet accreditation standards. The plan last summer was to add an emphasis to the established Masters of Science in Clinical Counseling. Also, the Masters of Science in Industrial and Organizational Psychology would be discontinued for now but could be revived as an online program.
Emporia State announced a new Master of Science in Nursing back in January.
