The Kansas Senate has approved a bill that bans transgender athletes in girls’ and women’s school sports if it gains final approval.
Governor Laura Kelly says Senate Bill 208 is “regressive” and will make it more difficult to recruit business to the state.
This is part of a concerted push by Republicans across the country. Supporters say it preserves fairness in women’s and girls’ sports. Critics say it’s discriminatory and unnecessary.
The vote was 24-10, sending the bill to the House. 17th District Senator Jeff Longbine of Emporia voted present and passing Wednesday.
