An Emporia trash truck fell through pavement weakened by a water line break in west Emporia early Thursday.
The incident happened on Ninth Avenue just west of Woodland shortly before 7 am.
Solid Waste Supervisor Keith Senn tells KVOE News he was fearing for the worst, both for the driver and the truck, when he got the call. Amazingly, both are OK — and back to work.
A water line break in the 2000 block of West Ninth apparently undermined the flowable fill under the pavement, leading to the crash.
Ninth is currently closed between Woodland and Prairie. Meanwhile, crews are working to get another water line repaired in the 1300 block of Grand. Estimated work timetables have not been released.
Work also continues on West 12th after Tuesday’s failure of a 16-inch line outside Newman Regional Health. Traffic remains blocked between Chestnut and Lincoln, and it may be late Thursday or Friday before traffic can move past the work zone. The cutout may not be fully paved until next week.
