Shawnee County prosecutors have announced formal charges against a Topeka man after the discovery of human remains near Lyndon last year.
Osage County Sheriff Chris wells says the remains were found near 205th and Lewelling on June 16, 2020. DNA analysis returned in December, confirming the identity as Darius Emmanuel Calvert, missing from Topeka since May 2019.
Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay has announced a premeditated murder charge against Claude Rafeal Kearse, age 38, in Calvert’s death. Kagay says Calvert was apparently murdered in Topeka and his body was dumped elsewhere. The case remained cold until partial remains were found in Osage County last year.
Bond has been set at $1 million. A first court appearance has not been announced.
