Kansas Congressman Tracey Mann is among a host of Republicans in Washington demanding a stronger response to the latest immigration issue affecting America’s southern border.
Mann says President Joe Biden isn’t acting strongly enough to stop the increased influx of people coming across the border. He says the president needs to let the world know America will enforce the laws already on the books.
Violence, corruption and two massive hurricanes have driven people notably from Central America to the United States. The Border Patrol has seen a surge in apprehensions and rescues the first three months of this year versus the past two years in total.
Mann joined KVOE recently to discuss the issues at hand in Washington and to focus on the work he is doing through his assignments to the Veterans Affairs and Agriculture committees. For Veterans Affairs, Mann says his work is geared towards spending efficiency and increased opportunity.
Mann says crop insurance, risk management and trade are his foremost priorities now in the Agriculture Committee. He is hoping the committee lays the foundation now for a new Farm Bill perhaps as soon as 2023, and he says America needs to rely on more trading partners instead of just China — even though China is doing better in complying with the Phase 1 trade deal reached last year to end a lengthy tariff war.
Mann is still displeased with the number of executive orders Biden has issued, saying it indicates an unwillingness to work with Republicans. He’s awaiting a decision on legislation he introduced early this year, the MANN Acts, to slow the process. If passed, this will institute a 30-day holding period before any announced executive action goes into effect. There would also be six-month and one-year review periods with reports back to Congress on how effective those executive orders were.
