Greenwood County fire crews dealt with two different grass fire cases in blustery conditions Sunday afternoon.
The first fire, according to Greenwood County Fire Chief Doug Williams, was reported just before 3 pm on 255th Road between P and Q west of Hamilton. The fire burned about three miles to the north, charring close to 1,000 acres and burning through several oil fields before it was contained.
Williams says no structures were damaged and nobody was injured. He says the fire started on the side of the road, so the cause is currently unclear.
A quintet of small fires developed near US Highway 54 and B, or near the Greenwood-Butler county line, shortly before 4:40 pm. Williams says fire crews got the blazes contained quickly and put out before they caused significant damage. About 10 total acres burned.
Williams says the fires west of Eureka were likely set. If you have information, call the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office at 620-583-5568.
