The fourth and final candidate for Emporia State’s soon-to-be-vacant provost position was on campus for his formal interview Friday.
Dr. Elwell has held numerous positions at various higher learning institutions throughout his career spanning back to the late 1980s. His career includes positions at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga, Auburn University at Montgomery and East Carolina University just to name a few.
Elwell believes his experience in various capacities at the higher education level gives him a thorough understanding of how to effectively communicate across all levels of a university.
Dr. Elwell says if he is chosen to serve as the next ESU provost, his main immediate focus will be increasing success for the university through enhanced retention and recruitment efforts.
Dr. Elwell follows current dean of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at Central State University Dr. George Arasimowicz, Cal State-Bakersfield dean of Business and Public Administration Dr. Angappa Gunasekaran and dean of Arts, Letters and Sciences at Southwest Minnesota State Dr. Aimee Shouse as finalists for the provost position.
The search for a new provost began after current provost David Cordle announced his retirement last fall. Cordle will retire in June.
A timeline for when the university plans to announce its selection for provost is currently pending.
