Outdoor burning will be disallowed across the KVOE listening area Friday, and people who conducted controlled burns Thursday need to take extra steps to avoid rekindles Friday.
The National Weather Service has issued red flag warnings for Lyon County and almost all surrounding counties. For Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties, the warning goes from noon to 8 pm. For Chase County, the warning goes from noon to 7 pm. Greenwood County is currently unaffected.
The Weather Service expects winds steadily out of the south between 20-30 mph by afternoon with gusts as high as 45 mph. Relative humidity levels will be at or below 26 percent. These factors will combine with dry grasses to cause extreme fire danger.
The high winds could also lead to downed tree limbs and scattered power outages.
