A pickup and cabin were both destroyed in a fire at Kahola Lake Friday.
According to Chase County Fire Chief Steve Fillmore, the fire began in a vehicle located on the southside of the lake. Nearby grass then caught flame and spread 150 yards before reaching and igniting the cabin, owned by Assistant Emporia Fire Chief Brandon Beck.
Lake Kahola manager Jason Passmore says he received a call about the fire around 12:15 pm and the fire was put out shortly before 2 pm.
Both the cabin and pickup have been considered total losses. Dunlap fire crews originally responded to the scene and were later assisted by Chase County Fire.
Firefighters managed to stop the flames before they could spread to any other structures and no injuries were reported.
According to Fillmore, the Kansas Fire Marshall’s Office is handling the investigation. A cause has yet to be determined.
