The Nature Conservancy, a longtime partner with the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, has entered into an agreement with the US Department of Agriculture’s Natual Resource Conservation Service to increase private land conservation.
This is a five-year deal involving Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and South Dakota. As part of this arrangement, the agencies will “prioritize the geographies and natural resource issues” to offer more impactful conservation help to landowners across the Great Plains and Central Plains.
NRCS programs such as the Environmental Quality Incentives Program, Agricultural Conservation Easement Program and Conservation Reserve Program are already used in Kansas, including the Flint Hills, to protect areas like the tallgrass prairie.
The Nature Conservancy has been a partner with the National Parks Service to manage the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve for over 15 years. It is also involved in climate change, land conservation, sustainable food production and sustainable living policy matters.
