As part of donate life month, Newman Regional Health is proudly touting a recent procedure that allowed four individuals to receive the gift of life just last week.
Last Saturday, Newman performed its first-ever triple organ procurement procedure for kidneys and a liver as well as a cornea donation. The donation came from a single patient who sadly passed away.
After the family made the patient’s “strong desire” to be an organ donor known, Newman and Midwest Transplant Network, a federally certified, not-for-profit organ procurement organization (OPO), collaborated to make it a possibility. MTN and the hospital were able to assist four people thanks to the donation.
Newman Chief Nursing Officer and COO Julia Pyle encourages anyone who is able to be an organ donor to do so. She says organ donations mean you’re giving another person the gift of life.
Pyle went on to say that last week’s procedure is an example of Newman’s efforts to continuously evolve to meet the growing needs of the local community.
Midwest Transplant Network’s Public Affairs Manager Michala Stoker says in the aforementioned news release, “Joining the donor registry is a gift to your family and friends, giving them certainty of your decision, and is a symbol of hope to those awaiting transplantation.”
