Unconventional times call for unconventional planning, and that defines the upcoming Emporia High prom May 1.
COVID-19 wiped out Emporia High’s prom last year, and staff and students wanted to make sure that didn’t happen again this year. Tuesday’s Emporia Showcase with Superintendent Allison Anderson-Harder was dedicated to the plans for prom, which revolve around a prom-themed murder mystery at White Auditorium. With dancing out of the picture, Emporia High language arts teacher and junior class sponsor Kaitlyn Just says some out-of-the-box thinking was needed.
Junior class president Gilberto Aguilera says prom is important to a lot of students, especially remote learners like himself. He’s excited for the new format.
Emporia High Assistant Principal Trevor Matthews says the decision was made early on to move forward with some version of prom.
Students may have mixed reactions to the change now, especially with no dance involved, but junior class representative Sarah McDonald says prom is a key part of a high school student’s existence — so it’s good to have the event take place.
Students are now planning the decorations and they are also seeking donations like money, gift cards and gift baskets. People and business owners can call Emporia High at 341-2365 if interested.
Prom is at White Auditorium. This will be a formal event for the students.
