One of Emporia’s biggest events of the year officially launches this weekend.
About 1,300 disc golfers are expected from across the country as the Dynamic Discs Open begins with early rounds of play Saturday at three area disc golf courses. In fact, Dynamic Discs owner Jeremy Rusco says a lot of participants are already here.
There will be several ways for the community to get involved, even with COVID-19 ongoing. Event coordinator Doug Bjerkaas says organizers can allow 1,500 spectators at Jones Park for play Wednesday and Thursday as well as the closing rounds Thursday and Friday at the Emporia Country Club. People need to buy $20 passes each day they want to watch the top-tier disc golfers.
There will also be several events in town during the evening hours leading up to the block party along Commercial Street from Sixth to 10th on May 1.
Registration will take place Tuesday and Wednesday using a drive-thru format at the former Dynamic Discs warehouse, 3601 West Sixth. The annual player meeting is shifting to an online format and has been posted to the Dynamic Discs Open Facebook page.
Jackie Morris of Dynamic Discs will talk about volunteer opportunities during the tournament on KVOE’s Newsmaker segment at 7:15 am Monday.
