Traffic jams aren’t typically part of Emporia life, but it’s understandable when you start one of the community’s largest events of the year and throw in a pandemic on top of it.
There has been quite the line at the old Dynamic Discs warehouse 3601 West Sixth, as better than 1,300 disc golfers from across America get registered for the Dynamic Discs Open. Event coordinator Doug Bjerkaas says traffic is moving smoothly after some early adjustments.
Contestants that go westbound on West Sixth will have to continue to Overlander — almost half a mile west of the warehouse — and then head east to get their player packets.
Registration continues until 5 pm Tuesday and then goes from 9 am to 5 pm Wednesday. Play has been underway since Saturday for several tiers, with the top-tier players teeing off Wednesday.
Under normal circumstances, contestants would gather at the Granada Theatre for registration and the player meeting. Organizers kept with the drive-thru registration format and online players meeting despite recent changes in COVID-19 protocols at both the city and county level.
Bjerkaas and Jeremy Rusco from Dynamic Discs will join KVOE’s Morning Show around 8:20 am Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with updates from the Dynamic Discs Open.
