Two people were hurt and transported for medical treatment after a wreck in far west Emporia on Thursday.
The crash happened shortly before 1 pm on the Interstate 35 roundabout connecting the highway to the Kansas Turnpike and US Highway 50. The driver of a pickup apparently fell asleep at the wheel, according to Emporia Police Sgt. Lisa Hayes, and hit the back end of a semi trailer — not just once but twice. The small truck then went off the road and got stuck.
One of the two people in the truck was extricated before getting loaded into an ambulance. Both people inside the truck, a man and a woman, were taken to Newman Regional Health by ambulance for observation and potential treatment. A condition report is pending. Nobody in the semi was hurt.
Names have not been released.
