La Grind is coming this Mother’s Day weekend.
Riders will take off from downtown Emporia at 9 am Saturday, with the finish line opening at 1 pm — shortly before the first riders are expected back in town. On Sunday, riders will again start at 9 am. The finish line will open at noon, with the awards ceremony taking place at 2 pm.
New to the event this year will be checkpoint feedzones dedicated for Emporia State Athletics Hall of Honor inductee Steve Henry, who was killed in a crash in Emporia nearly two months ago.
Riders can take part in 25-mile, 60-mile or 100-mile options. Thunderstorm activity is possible by late Saturday afternoon, but organizers believe most riders should be back in Emporia before the storms develop and move across the area. If riders are still out, there are support teams to get them to safety.
As has been the case in years past, all proceeds benefit Handlebars of Hope, which provides bikes to people needing transportation both locally and in Mexico.
