Memorial funds and fundraising ventures have been established to honor and help the teenaged victims of Saturday’s fatal crash near Emporia.
Emporia State Federal Credit Union is accepting donations for the Chase and Paxton Luby Memorial Fund, while a GoFundMe page has been set up to offset funeral expenses for Shelby Phoenix.
Phoenix and Chase Luby, both 17, and Paxton Luby, 13, were killed when the car Chase Luby was driving went off Road 147 into the Cottonwood River upside down near Road J. The car was fully submerged when authorities arrived and all inside had perished. One teenager in the car, Ashley Edwards, survived and was taken to Newman Regional Health for observation.
The chain of events leading to Saturday’s crash are still under investigation.
Plans are developing for two candlelight vigils this week. The first will be at 8 pm Tuesday at the crash site. Another is tentatively planned for 8 pm Friday. The location has not been announced, but that will likely not be at the site in part to allow people to pay their respects who may not be comfortable visiting the crash scene.
To donate to the Luby Memorial Fund, drop off or mail donations to either ESFCU branch — 310 West 12th or 2332 Industrial Road. To donate to Phoenix’s GoFundMe page, click here.
