23 Kansas counties will be eligible for state assistance following recent flooding including four in the KVOE listening area.
Monday afternoon Kansas Governor Laura Kelly issued a state of disaster emergency declaration after significant flooding across the state in recent days. The declaration allows counties to utilize state resources and personnel to assist with response and recovery operations granted counties meet certain criteria.
Among the eligible counties are Lyon, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee. In a news release, Governor Kelly says, “We urge residents to be aware of their safety. Floodwaters can be deceptive. Although people often think of tornadoes as the big destructive force of nature in Kansas, floods can be just as damaging, if not more so.”
This past weekend saw severe thunderstorm activity across the state, especially in the eastern half of the state, with Lyon County alone seeing anywhere from three to eight inches of rainfall between Saturday and Sunday.
