The Emporia Recreation Commission is in the early stages of development for two new potential ventures.
During the ERC monthly meeting Monday evening the ERC Board began discussing potential renovations for Whittier Park. According to Rec Director Tom McEvoy there are several ideas currently in mind for how to improve the park for the community.
This includes renovations to restrooms, the two current baseball fields and the construction of a new walking trail and dog park.
McEvoy says the project is still in the very early developmental stages. He says the ERC is planning to continue refining the scope of the potential project over the coming months at which time they will work towards setting a project budget.
In other business, the board also discussed the potential establishment of a Rec Commission Foundation, a topic McEvoy says has been discussed frequently over the past several years.
If the foundation were to be established McEvoy says it would have several different fund designations for donors. This includes a fund for sports, aquatics, programs and other ERC-related ventures.
Discussions are likely to continue on the topic in the coming months.
The ERC Board also received its first tentative look at the 2022 budget. The budget will need to be approved by August.
The ERC Board will reconvene for their monthly meeting in June.
