Emporia Public Works Director Dean Grant says the city’s stormwater system handled this weekend’s heavy rainfall well, aside from a few exceptions.
Grant tells KVOE News there was a concerted effort earlier this year to clear stormwater drains around town.
There were a handful of exceptions — 18th and Berkeley, parts of South Chestnut and Peter Pan Park — that were addressed Monday.
No additional work is planned this week with a risk of more rainfall, including the prospect of heavy rainfall Tuesday afternoon and evening. Grant says the city typically cleans the stormwater drains every two years, but that timetable may be stepped up given the amount of plant debris that can block the drains.
Grant also urged residents not to dump bags of grass or other foliage into the drains.
If people notice stormwater drains are slow or are apparently backed up, they should call the Public Works number at 620-340-6339 ext. 2.
