Flooding has subsided, at least for the time being, in the KVOE listening area.
The last flood warning for the area was the Neosho River at Neosho Rapids. According to the National Weather Service, the river dropped below the 22-foot flood stage just after noon Tuesday.
Whether or not the Neosho River or others in the area stay in their banks for the rest of the week is yet to be seen with rain chances still in the forecast into at least Monday. The greatest chances of rainfall Tuesday night through Wednesday. A marginal risk of severe weather is also possible by late afternoon Tuesday.
7 am Tuesday: FLOODING: Flood warning shortened for Neosho River at Neosho Rapids
At least for the short term, flooding may be coming to an end soon in the Neosho Rapids area.
The National Weather Service has trimmed a flood warning for the Neosho River at Neosho Rapids from ending late Tuesday evening to late Tuesday morning.
The river apparently crested just under 23.5 feet late Monday night, above flood stage of 22 feet. It’s now at 22.94 feet, causing minor flooding. The river will likely go below flood stage in the next few hours.
Whether that river or others in the area stay in their banks the rest of the week remains to be seen. Numerous rain chances are still in the forecast into at least Monday, with the greatest chances of rainfall Tuesday night through Wednesday. A marginal risk of severe weather is also possible by late afternoon Tuesday.
5 am Tuesday: Handful of Lyon County roads still closed; flood warnings for Neosho at Emporia, Americus canceled
Lyon County travel improved noticeably Monday when the Kansas Department of Transportation reopened Kansas Highway 99 north of Emporia.
The highway reopened by late afternoon after it had been closed since Sunday in the midst of extremely heavy rainfall.
The Lyon County Highway Department should announce more adjustments Tuesday morning. There are still a handful of county roads and intersections still closed after anywhere from 3-8 inches of rainfall just in Lyon County from Sunday:
*Road 170 west of Kansas Highway 99 and between Roads N and P
*Road P north of Road 160
*Road R north of Road 160
*Road S north of Road 150 to Road 170
Meanwhile, flooding has ended on the Neosho River at the Emporia and Americus gauges, so flood warnings have ended for those two locations. A flood warning continues for the Neosho at Neosho Rapids until Tuesday evening. The river apparently crested just under 23.5 feet late Monday night, above flood stage of 22 feet. The current reading is 23.05 feet, enough to cause moderate flooding. The river could go below flood stage by noon Tuesday.
