Emporia students between the ages of 12 and 15 had their first chance to get vaccinated for coronavirus Friday, and many took advantage.
Close to 200 students all told, as well as school staff and members of the general public took part in a primary dose vaccination clinic at the Middle School gymnasium. This vaccination event followed one at Emporia High School two weeks ago where close to 140 people total, including around 100 students, got vaccinated.
USD 253 Community Relations Director Lyndel Landgren was pleased with the event. He says this is the latest step for the district to get back to normal operations with the start of the new school year in August.
While plans for more vaccination opportunities for students are in the works, Lyon County Public Health continues with other plans for the general public. It is offering on-demand shots for appointments and walk-ins at the Flint Hills Community Health Center. It is also offering single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccines on Tuesdays, with plans to do likewise for the Pfizer shot currently under development.
