Last year, Emporia High had to drastically rearrange its plans for spring commencement with the coronavirus pandemic in its early stages. This year’s event wasn’t exactly back to the pre-pandemic normal, but it was much closer to the traditional format.
Over 300 Emporia High seniors walked the stage at White Auditorium as part of the ceremony Sunday. Principal Dathan Fischer says the senior class demonstrated hope and resilience.
Over 100 students were recognized for a variety of achievements and honors. The Class of 2021 also garnered around $1.1 million in scholarships as they prepare for postsecondary education.
There were several nods to the ongoing pandemic. Students could bring up to four family members or friends to the ceremony and all attending were told to wear masks. Aside from the seniors’ seating arrangement, social distancing was also required.
