Moderna is bidding to be the second COVID-19 vaccine provider to have shots available for children as young as age 12.
The company tested over 3,700 children between ages 12 and 17 and says blood tests indicate full efficacy for the vaccine. It plans to request emergency use authorization for that age group early next month.
Right now, Pfizer is the only COVID-19 vaccine authorized for people ages 12 and up. Moderna and Johnson & Johnson are authorized for patients ages 18 and up.
The federal government expects vaccines for elementary-age students may not be available until the end of the year.
