Emporia Fire has revised its number of dogs who survived Tuesday’s house fire in the 100 block of Market.
Battalion Chief Eron Steinlage says one of the dogs initially thought to be dead was breathing, so the dog was rushed to East Emporia Veterinary Clinic for treatment. One other dog survived. Two other dogs are confirmed dead.
The fire at 113 Market was reported shortly before 11:30 am and caused heavy damage inside the home. The cause and initiation point are still under investigation.

Thankfully, nobody was home when fire broke out inside a home near downtown Emporia. Unfortunately, three of four dogs inside the house died as a result of the incident.
Emporia Fire was called to 113 Market shortly after 11:20 am. Battalion Chief Eron Steinlage says there was evidence of smoke as they arrived.
Firefighters had the incident under control in less than 40 minutes.
The walls were left standing, but Steinlage says roughly half of the interior suffered fire or smoke damage. The cause and origination point are currently under investigation.
Julio and Petra Chaparro of Emporia own the two-story house.
Traffic in the 100 block of Market was blocked for close to two hours after the fire was reported.
