Former USD 253 Emporia superintendent Kevin Case is moving north, if at least for the next year.
The Rapid City Journal says Case has been approved as the interim superintendent for the Douglas School District in Box Elder, South Dakota, a town of nearly 10,000 people just outside Rapid City. Case begins July 1 after the district approved a paid leave of absence for prior superintendent Alan Kerr in April. The details of that decision were categorized as a personnel decision, so more information was not released.
Case will get a salary of $150,000.
Case served as Emporia’s superintendent from July 2016 to this past November, when the Emporia Board of Education approved an immediate separation agreement. As part of that, both Case and the district waived any potential claims of wrongdoing against each other as part of the settlement. Neither Case nor the board can disclose any details about Case’s employment or separation from the district aside from what is approved by state law and the Kansas Open Records Act. Case also received his full salary through June, including benefits and an additional $10,000 lump sum payment.
In March 2019, the board voted 4-3 to retain Case after concerns about leadership style, negotiating methods and management practices brought forward by staff and parents.
