A half-day remains for people wanting to file their paperwork for the 2021 election cycle.
We still don’t have enough candidates to force a primary Aug. 3 for any of the mayor, City Commission, City Council or school board races, but there was a flurry of filings Friday. Almost 15 different candidates stepped forward:
*Incumbent Gary Smith for Bushong Mayor
*Incumbent Lea Hamlin and challenger Veronica Dean for Americus City Council.
*Incumbents Christina Atchison and Dianne Smith for Bushong City Council.
*Nick Bess for Hartford City Council Position 2.
*Incumbent Matt Martin for Neosho Rapids City Council.
*Challenger Perry Petersen for USD 251 District 1 Position 4.
*Challengers Josh Hamlin and Fionna Lee for USD 251 District 2 Position 5.
*Challengers Thomas Cushing and Russ Heins for USD 251 District 3 Position 6.
*Challenger Lucas Markowitz for USD 252 Position 2.
*Challenger Melissa Carson for USD 252 Position 3.
Friday’s filings mean almost all Lyon County races will have at least one candidate. At this time, all three Admire City Council positions and the Reading mayor position have no candidates. For Bushong and Neosho Rapids mayors as well as Hartford City Council Position 2 and USD 252 Positions 3 and 6, there is just one candidate each.
The filing and withdrawal deadline is noon Tuesday.
