Mother Nature forced some schedule adjustments on Memorial Day.
Light rain prompted organizers of Emporia’s Memorial Day service to move the event from the All Veterans Memorial to the Lyon County Fairgrounds Anderson Building. Part of the event featured a tribute to all veterans from US Army veteran Jerry Laurendine.
Also, Tablets of Honor organizer Frank Lowery updated the project as part of a larger look at the 30-year history of the All Veterans Memorial. Lowery says the Tablets of Honor could move into the next construction phase soon.
The addition of more tablets is currently awaiting state approval, and that could happen as soon as next week.
Close to 75 people attended the ceremony, which also included a memorial roll call, salute to departed soldiers and Taps. Photos are online at KVOE.com.
Meanwhile, Chase County’s Memorial Day service moved indoors, while Olpe’s service was canceled.
Separately, Monday’s weather forced several community pools to close. The Jones Aquatic Center and pools in Cottonwood Falls, Council Grove and Madison all closed due to the cool, wet conditions.
