For decades, the Kansas Masons have been working to end cancer, and the latest sign of that locally is coming this upcoming weekend.
Free cancer screenings will be at the Masonic Lodge, 424 Merchant, from 9 am to noon Saturday. Local Mason Dave Hendricks says this is the third time the group has offered this service.
The Kansas Masons and the University of Kansas Cancer Center have been partners since the mid-1970s, with the Masons contributing around $30 million towards ending cancer. Nearly 20 years ago, the Masons had another partnership to create the Midwest Cancer Alliance — now named the Masonic Cancer Alliance. The cancer screenings are part of this outreach effort.
Screenings will be available for skin, prostate and colorectal cancers. Body mass index and blood pressure checks will also be available, and there will also be resources available for people who want to quit smoking.
Registrations are needed and the link is available here. People getting screened will need to fill out basic contact and medical information. Hendricks says there is no need to bring insurance information. The entire process could take 20 minutes or less.
