Activities are officially underway for Unbound Gravel 2021.
The All Things Gravel Expo kicked off the festivities in downtown Emporia Thursday afternoon. Hundreds of vendors and cyclists from around the country were in attendance and ecstatic to be back in the Emporia community for the world’s premier gravel event.
Roger Brown of Untapped Maple Syrup Athletic Fuel traveled all the way from Vermont to attend his very first Unbound. Brown says it is exciting to be in Emporia for an event that has brought gravel cycling to where it is today.
Garret Seacat of Absolute Endurance didn’t have the furthest drive coming from Manhattan, but he was just as excited as anyone else to be in Emporia for the event. He says while the pandemic did not stop cyclists from being able to ride this past year, it did take away some key elements from the experience that he’s looking forward to having back this weekend.
The expo coincided with check-in for all distances at the Lyon County History Center Thursday. Check-in will continue Friday with the Unbound XL, 25 mile, 50 mile and junior riders set to take off at different times throughout the day.
The 200-mile race will launch at 6 am Saturday followed by the 100-mile race at 7 am. The annual finish line party begins at 11 am in downtown Emporia with coverage of the day’s races starting around noon on www.FloBikes.com.
KVOE will broadcast from the check-in activities at the Lyon County History Center from 10 am to 12:30 pm Friday. KVOE will also broadcast from the launch of the 100-mile and 200-mile races Saturday morning as well as from the finish line from 4-7 pm Saturday evening.
The Unbound Gravel Awards Ceremony is scheduled to take place from 8 am to 9 am Sunday in the 700 block of Mechanic.
