The Lyon County Food and Farm Council is currently working to recruit businesses to assist in its mission to reduce the amount of discarded food entering the landfill.
During a recent update to the Lyon County Commission last week, Council Program Director Teresa Briggs discussed this endeavor saying the council is planning to spend the remainder of the year focusing on increasing composting amongst local businesses. She says composting provides a wide range of benefits to the local ecosystem.
In addition to increasing local composting efforts, Briggs tells KVOE News the council is working to encourage stores and restaurants to consider “redirecting” traditionally discarded foods to organizations that help feed those in need such as soup kitchens and homeless shelters. She says there has been some hesitancy in the past from businesses out of fear of liability in the event someone were to become ill after consuming donated foods.
Briggs says thankfully the Good Samaritan law does provide legal protection for businesses that “in good faith provide food and feel it is healthy” in the event someone were to become sick or ill.
