At least one apartment is a complete loss and several others were damaged when fire broke out in an apartment house near downtown Emporia early Wednesday.
Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Tony Fuller says the apartment in the attic’s southeast corner was destroyed after fire was reported at 816 Congress around 5:30 am. an apartment across the hall suffered heavy heat and smoke damage. Water damage was also noted in three of the other four apartments to varying degrees.
Fuller says they were able to contain the fire to complex itself and, specifically, Apartment 6 where the fire apparently started.
The destroyed apartment appears to be the source of the fire, but the cause is still under investigation. Everybody inside the three-story apartment house made it out safely, but a dog died in Apartment 6. Several animals were rescued in Apartment 4 directly below Apartment 6.

8:00 am Wednesday: Apartment house at 816 Congress suffers extensive interior damage after blaze; one dog killed
Thankfully, all the people inside an apartment house at 816 Congress were out of the building shortly after fire broke out.
Unfortunately, one dog passed away during the fire that was reported around 5:30 am.
Fire caused extensive damage inside, according to Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Tony Fuller. He says the building had six apartments, of which five were occupied. There is currently no word yet on how many may have been damaged or where the fire started. A cause is currently under investigation.

6 am Wednesday: Emporia Fire battling house fire near downtown
Emporia Fire is working to put out a fire near downtown Wednesday morning.
Fire crews were called to 816 Congress around 5:30 am and found a column of smoke rising from the attic. Early indications are the main fire was knocked down shortly before 6 am.
There is currently no word on whether anybody was inside the house at the time. With the firefighting effort still underway, there is currently no word on where the fire officially started or how it developed. The 800 block of Congress is currently blocked to traffic until further notice.
