Work is back underway on the Tablets of Honor portion of Emporia’s All Veterans Memorial.
Local veterans got state clearance and contractor approval to move forward this month, and organizer Frank Lowery was beyond pleased to get started again. He says the landscape has changed in several different ways, notably in federal regulations and state oversight of Cottonwood River flood matters.
Fellow veteran Ron Whitney says the interest in Tablets of Honor has been apparent since the program was announced.
The project started in 2016. The first phase actually started with six tablets, expanded to 10 and then added an 11th tablet. Each tablet has space for 80 names. The goal now is to add three tablets, one of which is completely full and another which is better than half-full. There is room for another four tablets and organizers expect all the new tablets will be filled.
Weather permitting, it could take up to two months to add the next three tablets.
People wanting to submit names need to fill out an application online at www.allveteransday.org, including name, branch and time of service, rank and proof of honorable discharge. Cost for the engraving is now $150.
As Tablets of Honor resumes, more items may be added later including a field memorial and security cameras.
