The Detroit Tigers completed a 3 game sweep of the Kansas City Royals Wednesday afternoon, rallying for a 6-5 win. The Royals have now lost 6 in a row and 11 of their last 12.
The Royals had built a 3-1 lead on an Adalberto Mondesi home run in the 2nd inning and a Salvador Perez 2 run home run in the 3rd inning. The Tigers rallied scoring 3 runs in the 7th and a run in the 8th and 9th innings to take a 6-3 lead.
Greg Holland gave up the 3 runs in the 7th, it was his 3rd blown save and 2nd loss of the season.
In the bottom of the 9th Whit Merrifield doubled in a run and Carlos Santana singled to drive in a run.
Royals starting pitcher Brady Singer left after 3 innings of work with right shoulder tightness. He gave up 1 run on 4 hits.
Manager Mike Matheny says the shoulder issue popped up after his last start and they had him on a pitch count today out of caution. He reached that limit and they were pleased with his outing.
The Royals will get Thursday off and open a 3 game series at home against the Boston Red Sox Friday night.
Tuesday night the Royals activated Adalberto Mondesi from the 10 day injured. Mondesi had been on the IL since June 4 after he sustained the injury during a defensive play on May 31 against the Pirates.
In a corresponding move, the Royals placed reliever Ronald BolaƱos on the 10-day injured list with a right flexor strain.
