Right now, livestock is holding their own, in part because of extended rainfall during the back half of May. This is good because Lyon Count Extension ag agent Brian Rees says cattle can go through a lot of water.
With temperatures soaring into the triple digits as of late with projected highs in or above 100 degrees Thursday and Friday. Cattle will also wade into ponds to try and avoid the flies and other biting insects. This unfotunately decreases the drinking quality of water dramtically.
Without water cattle cool themselves through their breathing in most cases, as well as through shade and breezes. However Rees says there is some concern for possible health problems for calves born in the brutal cold we had in Febuary.
Time will tell if these health problems surface as the summer goes on.
