6:40 pm Thursday: Air temperatures hit triple digits in Emporia
It wasn’t the earliest date Emporia had hit 100 degrees and it wasn’t the hottest June day on record for the city. Still, Thursday was notable for reaching the century mark as early as it did on the calendar.
Temperatures climbed to 100, slightly lower than the projected high temperature of 102. Heat index readings topped at 102, below the predicted peak of 105.
Based on National Weather Service records dating to the early 1950s, the earliest date for 100 degrees in Emporia was June 10, 1953. The hottest June day on record for Emporia was a 107-degree day on June 15, 1953.
The current forecast calls for a high of 99 degrees Friday. The weekend should also be hot — mid- to upper 90s Saturday and Sunday — before a cold front brings sharply cooler air to the area. Highs may climb to the low 80s Monday fall just short of 80 degrees Tuesday. Showers and storms are also possible Sunday night into Tuesday.
